San Angelo Gas Prices Climb to $4.15 as Texas Averages Rise

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.93 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA Texas. 

That price is 10 cents more than on this day last week and $1.14 more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $4.41 per gallon, while drivers in Houston are paying the least at $3.83 per gallon. The national average is $4.44, which is 16 cents more than a week ago and $1.24 more than a year ago.

In San Angelo, drivers are currently paying an average of $4.15 per gallon. That price is a 21-cent increase from this time a week ago and a $1.32 increase from this time a year ago. The highest recorded price ever recorded in San Angelo was $4.48 on June 14th of 2022. 

At a time of year when gasoline prices typically begin falling as summer travel demand eases, Texas drivers are instead seeing prices move higher, largely because of elevated crude oil costs. Crude oil remains near $100 per barrel amid continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. When shipping through the strait is disrupted or threatened, concerns grow that less oil will reach the global market, while increased shipping costs can add further pressure to crude prices.

Because crude oil is the largest component of the retail price of gasoline, those higher costs eventually make their way through refineries and distribution networks to the pump. Gas prices have now climbed back to levels last seen earlier this year during the spring, and if crude oil and pump prices do not retreat soon, Texas could see the most expensive September statewide gas price average on record. While Texas could set a record for the highest September statewide gas price average, current prices remain well below the state’s all-time record of $4.69 per gallon, set in June 2022.

“Texas drivers are seeing an unusual trend for this time of year. Gas prices typically decline after the summer travel season, but persistently high crude oil prices are pushing costs in the opposite direction,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “With crude oil hovering around $100 per barrel, there continues to be significant upward pressure on pump prices. If we don’t see some relief soon, Texas could experience the most expensive September statewide gas price average on record.”

Diesel Prices

Diesel prices are in record territory, with the statewide average climbing to a new all-time high today at $5.96 per gallon. That means motorists who rely on diesel are seeing historically high prices at the pump.
