San Angelo Area Records 70 Drilling Permits, 91 Oil Completions in July

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo area saw 70 permits to drill new oil or gas wells and 91 new oil completions in July 2026, according to monthly statistics released Thursday by the Railroad Commission of Texas. 

The district recorded no new gas completions. 

Statewide, the RRC issued 693 original drilling permits last month. That total included 612 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 11 to re-enter plugged wellbores, nine for field transfers, 58 for re-completions and three for reclassifications. 

Well-type breakdowns for the original permits were 103 oil, 54 gas, 497 oil and gas, 29 injection and 10 other. 

Commission staff processed 982 oil, 545 gas and 249 injection completions across Texas in July. 

By district, Midland led with 275 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 360 new oil completions and 72 new gas completions. Other areas included San Antonio with 76 permits, 19 oil completions and 34 gas completions; Refugio with 45 permits, 22 oil and 29 gas; East Texas with 44 permits, six oil and 22 gas; and Lubbock with 37 permits, 10 oil and zero gas. 

Statewide totals for new activity were 612 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 541 new oil completions and 189 new gas completions.
