SAN ANGELO, TX — Texas shoppers can save on back-to-school purchases this weekend as the state's annual sales tax holiday begins Friday and continues through Sunday.
The tax-free weekend runs from Friday, Aug. 7, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9, allowing shoppers to avoid the state's 6.25% sales tax on many qualifying back-to-school items.
Eligible purchases include most clothing, footwear, school supplies, office supplies and backpacks.
To qualify for the exemption, each item must cost less than $100. There is no limit on the number of qualifying items shoppers may purchase.
The exemption applies to purchases made in person, online, by mail or by phone, provided the transaction is completed during the three-day sales tax holiday and through a qualifying Texas retailer.
Items that do not qualify for the tax exemption include:
- Products priced at $100 or more
- Clothing subscription boxes
- Specially designed athletic or protective clothing and footwear
- Clothing alterations and cleaning services
- Materials used to make or repair clothing
- Jewelry
- Handbags
- Purses
- Wallets
- Watches
- Luggage
- Briefcases
- Computers
- Software
- Textbooks
- Computer bags
- Athletic, duffle and gym bags
- Framed backpacks
