BRONTE, TX — The Bronte City Council has banned the operation of bicycles, electric bicycles, mopeds and motor-assisted scooters on city sidewalks, citing safety risks to pedestrians, business patrons and riders themselves.
Ordinance 26-06, passed, approved and adopted July 16, 2026, makes it illegal to ride those devices on any city sidewalk. Violators face a misdemeanor charge and a fine of up to $500.
Mayor Dan Waddell signed the measure. City Secretary Teresa Ballard attested to it.
The ordinance draws authority from the Texas Transportation Code, which allows cities to prohibit bicycles — including mopeds and electric bicycles — on sidewalks and to ban motor-assisted scooters on sidewalks when officials determine it is necessary for safety.
The council found that operating the devices on sidewalks endangers others and the operators. It stated the ban serves the health, safety and welfare of the city.
A severability clause ensures that if any part is struck down by a court, the rest remains in force.
