SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's mobile STEM Innovation Lab that arrived on campus last fall is now fully functional and available to bring immersive science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiences directly to local and area communities across West Texas.
Funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant, ASU's STEM Innovation Lab was crafted by Ohio-based Farber Specialty Vehicles and is outfitted with cutting-edge lab software and equipment developed by the award-winning Groove Jones creative technology company. It creates an innovative, hands-on learning space to inspire students' interest in the STEM fields through interactive technologies, including:
- Virtual Reality (VR)
- Augmented Reality (AR)
- Cybersecurity
- Drone technology
- Robotics
The mobile lab also includes physical lab equipment, like microscopes and telescopes, and a STEM Career Pathways module.
As a key component of the STEM Outreach Program in ASU's College of Science and Engineering, the ultimate goal of the mobile lab is to ignite curiosity, build workforce skills, and bridge the technology gap for elementary and middle school students and educators, who often have the least access to cutting-edge tools.
"We've spent the past several months making sure every part of the mobile STEM Innovation Lab was installed, tested and ready to provide the best possible experience for students," said Tony Garcia, K-12 outreach coordinator. "Now that everything is fully operational, we're excited to take the lab on the road and welcome visitors to campus. We're currently accepting reservations on a first-come, first-served basis as we begin filling our fall calendar. Our goal is to bring hands-on STEM experiences and emerging technologies directly to students throughout West Texas."
Schools interested in setting up a tour of the STEM Innovation Lab at ASU or scheduling an on-site appearance at their campus can fill out an electronic reservation form. Due to high interest in this program, schools are encouraged to submit their reservation requests as far in advance as possible.
In addition to its public bookings, the mobile lab will continue to be present at various ASU campus events open to the public, like Night at the Museum and various Lab Nights, and will also support ASU academic programs, recruiting, faculty outreach, community partnerships and other STEM initiatives.
The mobile STEM Innovation Lab is also another example of why securing funding to support new and enhanced resources for innovative academic and community outreach initiatives is one of the top priorities of ASU's ongoing "Leading the Charge" capital campaign. Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and corporations to partner in shaping innovation, advancing education and maximizing the mobile lab's long-term impact.
