SAN ANGELO, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 753 original drilling permits statewide in May 2026, including 99 permits to drill new oil or gas wells in the San Angelo area, according to statistics released by the agency.
The San Angelo district ranked second in new drilling permits, behind only the Midland district’s 297. Commission staff also processed 90 new oil well completions in the San Angelo area and zero new gas completions.
Statewide, the 753 original permits included 655 to drill new oil or gas wells, 84 for re-completions, 11 to re-enter plugged wellbores, two field transfers and one reclassification. The well-type breakdown was 151 oil, 73 gas, 475 oil-and-gas, 43 injection and 11 other permits.
The commission processed 914 oil completions, 313 gas completions and 146 injection completions across Texas last month.
A district-by-district breakdown of new drilling permits and new oil and gas completions showed the following totals for new oil/gas holes permitted: 655; new oil completions: 517; new gas completions: 136.
