SAN ANGELO, TX — Two former San Angelo residents are coming home next month for a benefit concert aimed at addressing suicide prevention for young men in West Texas.
Coleman White and Philip Lupton have launched Good Company, a men’s mental health effort developed in partnership with West Texas Counseling & Guidance.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for men in their 20s and 30s, a statistic that prompted White and Lupton to create the new initiative aimed at changing that reality.
The two founders, longtime friends and former roommates at the University of Texas, said they were motivated after witnessing what they describe as a quiet crisis in their community.
According to a news release, the oil and gas industry — a cornerstone of the regional economy — has the highest male suicide rate of any industry in the United States.
“We’re young guys from West Texas trying to reach other young guys from West Texas,” White said. “We aren’t counselors, but we are the audience. We know how these guys talk and where they hang out.”
Good Company operates as a fund under West Texas Counseling & Guidance, directing money to professional counselors and established local programs. Its goal is to reshape how mental health is discussed in the region and create a sense of community among young men.
To launch the initiative, organizers will host “Roundup in Good Company” on June 26 at the Historic Fort Concho Stables in San Angelo. The event will feature a performance by the country duo Briscoe, of which Lupton is a founding member, marking the band’s first hometown show.
“Coming back to Angelo with the band for a cause like this is a dream,” Lupton said. “To play for the people we grew up with, for something that actually matters — there’s no better feeling.”
Doors open at 6 p.m., and all proceeds will benefit West Texas Counseling & Guidance. Organizers said the initiative has already raised more than $50,000 toward its $75,000 goal. Sponsorship opportunities remain available, and all funds raised will stay within the West Texas region.
