San Angelo Council OKs $861K Grant to Fight Vehicle Burglaries

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution authorizing the city to apply for and accept an $861,432 Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority grant for the Police Department to combat motor vehicle burglary and theft.

The grant request for fiscal year 2027 includes $717,861 in state funds, or 80 percent, with the city providing a $143,571 cash match. Council members approved the item as a consent agenda item with no discussion.

The funding builds on the FY26 program by adding personnel and equipment. It supports a total of four positions — three investigator roles and one sergeant position — at adjusted pay levels, along with three trucks and one drone for investigators. It also continues funding for license plate reader camera leases established in 2026 and travel to program conferences.

Personnel costs are listed at $96,066, including basic benefits. Equipment costs total $30,666, and travel expenses plus LPR leases are $16,839.
