San Angelo Area Logs 103 Drilling Permits, 123 Oil Completions in March

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Area recorded 103 new drilling permits and 123 new oil well completions in March 2026, the Railroad Commission of Texas reported Thursday. 

The San Angelo Area ranked second statewide in new drilling permits, behind only the Midland district, which issued 278 permits and recorded 436 new oil completions. San Angelo also posted the second-highest number of new oil completions. 

Statewide, the commission issued 692 original drilling permits in March, including 624 to drill new oil or gas wells. The total also included five permits to re-enter plugged wellbores, five field transfers, 57 re-completions and one reclassification. 

Among the 692 original permits, 134 were for oil wells, 82 for gas wells, 441 for oil and gas wells, 24 for injection wells and 11 for other types. Commission staff processed 1,112 oil completions, 478 gas completions and 87 injection completions during the month. 

Other district highlights for new drilling permits, new oil completions and new gas completions included:

  • East Texas: 59 permits, 1 oil, 46 gas
  • San Antonio Area: 44 permits, 17 oil, 26 gas
  • Lubbock Area: 36 permits, 13 oil, 0 gas
  • Refugio Area: 28 permits, 30 oil, 20 gas
  • Southeast Texas: 32 permits, 10 oil, 8 gas
  • North Texas: 20 permits, 8 oil, 2 gas
  • Deep South Texas: 13 permits, 4 oil, 36 gas
  • East Central Texas: 3 permits, 0 oil, 3 gas
  • West Central Texas: 4 permits, 3 oil, 0 gas
  • Panhandle: 4 permits, 8 oil, 0 gas

Statewide totals for new drilling permits, new oil completions and new gas completions were 624, 653 and 223, respectively.
