SAN ANGELO, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 727 original drilling permits in January 2026, including 673 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, according to statistics released.
The San Angelo area (District 7C) received 83 of those new-well permits, ranking second among the state’s districts. The Midland district (District 8) led with 397 permits.
Statewide, operators reported 582 new oil well completions and 200 new gas well completions. Commission staff processed a total of 1,134 oil completions, 374 gas completions, and 166 injection completions during the month.
In the San Angelo area, operators completed 112 new oil wells and no new gas wells. Midland reported 307 new oil completions and 59 new gas completions.
Other notable districts included San Antonio (49 new permits, 37 new oil completions, 59 new gas completions) and Refugio (39 new permits, 60 new oil completions, 9 new gas completions).
The remaining 54 original permits covered re-entries, field transfers, re-completions, and reclassifications. The full breakdown of permit types included 78 oil, 47 gas, 567 oil and gas, 29 injection, 4 service, and 2 other.
