SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo radio station ended its long-running Tejano music format Feb. 1, switching to Christian adult contemporary programming under a new brand, “99.5 Spirit of Truth Radio," according to a report made by TejanoNation.
Saver Media, owner of KQTC 99.5 FM in Christoval/San Angelo, made the change after more than 12 years of Tejano programming that served listeners across the Concho Valley, according to industry publication Radio Insight.
Station co-owner Tony Cuellar, who operates the outlet with his wife, Gloria Cuellar, addressed listeners Jan. 30 on air and in a video posted to the station’s Facebook page.
“I want to thank God for giving us 12 years in the industry of Tejano music,” Cuellar said. “I want to thank every listener that supported the station. Me and my wife have made a decision that God has called us to do other things.”
The newly branded Spirit of Truth Radio will broadcast Christian music live and local from its San Angelo studios, with plans to partner with area churches for mission-focused programming.
Q99.5 became the first outlet to air Tejano Nation Radio in October 2015, according to the report, helping launch what grew into a nationally syndicated show heard on Tejano, Regional Mexican, and Spanish-language stations from Florida to Idaho.
Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo called the station “the launching pad” for the program more than a decade ago and voiced support for the Cuellars’ new direction.
