Downtown San Angelo Receives Grant for Second Downtown Archway

SAN ANGELO, TX - Downtown San Angelo, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Anice B. Read Fund to support the construction of a second archway welcoming residents and visitors into downtown San Angelo.

The new archway will be located at the northern entrance into downtown, across from the Angelo Catholic Outreach Center and Habitat for Humanity.

Designed to celebrate San Angelo’s heritage and creative spirit, the archway’s pillars will be adorned with "Cowboys & Creatives–inspired motifs and mosaics," blending Western tradition with the city’s vibrant artistic culture, information from Downtown San Angelo stated. This installation will complement the existing downtown archway and extend the welcoming atmosphere that has become a signature of the area, the information continued to state. 

“We are grateful to the Anice B. Read Grant for investing in our vision to create a more beautiful, accessible, and welcoming downtown,” said Executive Director Monica Ramos. “This second archway will help strengthen the sense of place in our community and highlight what makes San Angelo unique.”

Construction planning is currently underway, with installation expected to begin in the fall.

The Anice Read Fund is named for Anice Read, a founder of Texas Downtown. Anice was a beloved and passionate advocate for the historical preservation of Texas downtowns, believing them to be the lifeblood and true heart of a community. She was appointed to the Texas Historical Commission in 1968 and became the first director of the Texas Main Street Program, a THC division. The Fund was formed in 1999 to honor her legacy and her contributions to Texas downtowns. Grants from the fund are used for a variety of purposes including physical projects, professional development, and program and staff development.
