Service Member Dies After 'Incident' on Goodfellow AFB

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — A service member assigned to the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow Air Force Base has died following an incident that occurred on base Thursday night, according to statements from base officials.

“The 17th Training Wing is deeply saddened to share the death of a service member assigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base due to an incident that occurred Thursday night,” the base said in a public post Sunday evening. “Our hearts and condolences go out to the member’s unit, family and friends. No additional information is available at this time.”

Earlier on Friday, the 17th Training Wing Public Affairs confirmed that a U.S. Marine was seriously injured on base Thursday night and that the incident was under investigation. Base officials have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the Marine’s death.

On Sunday, the base announced that the inbound South Gate and Pedestrian Gate will remain closed until further notice. According to the latest media advisory, the South Gate will only be open for outbound traffic from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily, while the North Gate will continue to operate 24 hours for access to and from the base.

The Visitor Control Center and Commercial Vehicle Inspection Area are scheduled to resume normal weekday hours beginning Monday, Oct. 6. Officials asked the public to expect delays and said updates will be provided as needed.

The 17th Training Wing has not indicated whether the gate restrictions are related to Thursday night’s incident.
