SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's Tau-Sigma chapter of the national Kappa Sigma fraternity brought home several of the highest honors awarded at the recent 75th Biennial Kappa Sigma Grand Conclave in Las Vegas.
The ASU chapter was awarded a Founders Award for Chapter Excellence (FACE), the most prestigious distinction a Kappa Sigma chapter can receive. It recognizes outstanding achievement across all areas of chapter operations, leadership and philanthropy, and only 30 out of more than 300 active chapters across North America received the honor in 2025. This also marks the first time in chapter history that Tau-Sigma has earned the FACE accolade.
Additionally, the Tau-Sigma chapter earned a Military Heroes Champion Excellence Award, highlighting outstanding philanthropic efforts in support of Kappa Sigma's national Military Heroes Campaign. ASU's chapter was recognized as the No. 1 chapter in the nation for dollars raised per member, exemplifying the fraternity's values of service, generosity and community impact.
"These awards reflect the hard work, dedication and brotherhood that define Tau-Sigma," said Brenden Woljevach, the chapter's grand master. "Earning the FACE award for the first time in our history, along with being recognized for our philanthropic excellence, is a milestone that inspires us to keep raising the standard for our chapter, our campus and our community."
Several Tau-Sigma officers also received individual awards for their leadership and service:
- Outstanding Grand Master - CJ Pena, management major from Leander
- Outstanding Grand Procurator - Brenden Woljevach, kinesiology major from Florence
- Outstanding Grand Treasurer - Devin Howlett, computer science major from Brady
- Outstanding Grand Scribe - Jaysen Gomez, biology major from Water Valley
On their way to receiving national recognition, the Tau-Sigma chapter raised nearly $60,000 in 2024-25 through philanthropic events benefiting veterans, military families and local charities - marking the most impactful year in chapter history. Its philanthropy reached new heights through several signature events:
- Navy SEAL Parachute Demonstration at ASU baseball game - Former Navy SEALs parachuted onto the field during a Rams game, drawing a large crowd and raising more than $17,000 for wounded and fallen soldiers and their families.
- "100 Man" Charity Events with Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) - Tau-Sigma partnered with the nonprofit CVA to host three "100 Man" events, where community members, sponsors and nonprofits gathered for an evening of giving. The events raised a combined $20,000.
- Community Engagement with the American Legion - Beyond major fundraisers, Tau-Sigma actively supported the San Angelo community by volunteering at car shows, chili cook-offs, and other events alongside the American Legion, raising additional funds to support local veterans and their families.
In addition to campus and community engagement, many Tau-Sigma members are active firefighters, military personnel and public servants - carrying Kappa Sigma's values of fellowship, leadership, scholarship and service into their professional and personal lives.
