SAN ANGELO, TX – Texas Highways magazine has published a feature on San Angelo’s International Waterlily Collection as the garden prepares for its 20th annual Lily Fest this September.
The article highlights how the collection, located in Civic League Park, has become a global attraction with more than 300 varieties of water lilies. It credits founder Kenneth Landon, who spent decades traveling the world to collect rare and endangered lilies, including the elusive Star of Mexico. Landon transformed an abandoned reflecting pool into the renowned display before his death in 2021.
Current director Chase Twombly, who worked with Landon for over 20 years, now oversees the garden with the City of San Angelo Parks and Recreation Department. The magazine notes that visitors can enjoy the collection year-round, schedule tours, and even take home bouquets of flowers.
The collection has twice hosted the International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society Symposium and continues to attract international visitors. Lily Fest, first held in 2005, will again feature family-friendly activities, educational exhibits, and live music.
