SAN ANGELO, TX — Clutching a bright blue sign reading “Prayer Drive Thru,” Lonnie Bingham stands near the intersection of Southland Boulevard and Knickerbocker Road several afternoons each week, offering free prayers to anyone willing to pull over.
Bingham, who works at a Cricket Wireless store in San Angelo, said he began praying for strangers years ago while living in San Antonio. After moving to San Angelo, he revived the practice in recent months, hoping to help people who might not make it to church.

"Mainly this is to help people out, pray for them, because some people just don't want to go to church, or sometimes they're too busy on the weekends, like me, I'm usually working every Sunday," he said. "So it's to outreach to the people in the community that way. The other thing is, even if they don't come and pray, at least I'm throwing God's love out there. I'm getting it out there so you people know you're not alone. You know God does care about you."
Bingham said he spends two to three hours at a time along the roadside, typically seeing about one or two people per hour, though sometimes he’s had a line of cars waiting. He recalled recently praying with a man from the Coast Guard who was struggling emotionally after working the Kerr County flood cleanup efforts.
In addition to Southland and Knickerbocker, Bingham occasionally sets up near Sunset Mall near the Sunset Drive and Wellington Street intersection.
Bingham hopes to expand his outreach through a Facebook page he plans to launch soon. Until then, he encourages anyone seeking prayer or conversation to look for him and his sign along the roadside.
