AUSTIN, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 557 original drilling permits in May 2025, with the majority for new oil or gas wells, according to data released Tuesday.
Of the total, 504 permits were to drill new wells, while the rest were for re-completions, re-entries, a field transfer, and a reclass.
The highest number of permits — 302 — was issued in the Midland area. The San Angelo area (District 7C) followed with 45 permits for new drilling.
In terms of well completions, Midland dominated with 419 new oil completions and 66 gas completions. The San Angelo area recorded 86 oil completions, the second highest statewide, along with one gas completion.
Statewide, Commission staff processed 1,178 oil, 421 gas, and 230 injection completions in May.
Permit categories included 76 for oil, 40 for gas, 398 for oil and gas, 26 for injection, and 17 for other well types.
