SAN ANGELO, TX — The Concho Valley and Big Country are under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service in San Angelo.
A line of storms is expected to develop west and northwest of the area and move in after 6 p.m., bringing the threat of very large hail up to the size of baseballs, damaging winds up to 75 mph, and a low-end tornado risk, mainly near Sweetwater and Roby. Areas such as Sweetwater, Sterling City, and Mertzon could see storms as early as 7 p.m., with San Angelo and Abilene impacted between 9 and 10 p.m.

“A cluster of thunderstorms will develop west and northwest of the area, and move in this evening, continuing through late tonight,” NWS forecasters said in a Thursday afternoon update. “Very large hail and damaging winds are the main concerns, with isolated tornado risk.”
Temperatures are expected to remain below normal Friday before a significant warm-up through the weekend. San Angelo is forecast to reach a high of 78°F Friday, climbing into the mid-90s by early next week. A low chance of isolated thunderstorms remains Friday, followed by mostly dry conditions.
