SAN ANGELO, TX — A public BMX course is one step closer to becoming reality at Hot Water Slough Park after the San Angelo Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted unanimously May 7 to recommend moving forward with a lease agreement, likely with the San Angelo Bicycling Association.
The planned course would cover approximately 2.15 acres of largely undeveloped parkland off Red Bluff Road near Lake Nasworthy. It would be limited to bicycles only and open for day use, with potential for local competitions.
A representative of the bike club told the board they have three local track designers ready to build the course at no cost and said the project would be completed as inexpensively as possible, with help from volunteers and donated services.
Board members discussed fencing, drainage needs, and safety signage. If approved, the lease would run three to five years, with a modest annual fee similar to existing recreational agreements the city holds with groups like the archery and bass clubs, which is about $500 a year.
The proposal will now head to the San Angelo City Council, where it is expected to be placed on the agenda in late June or early July.
