SAN ANGELO, TX — Lake View High School was placed on hold Monday afternoon after reports of a man walking near the school with a gun, according to the San Angelo Police Department.
A photo of the individual walking with a gun, which appeared to be a rifle or shotgun, was shared on social media, prompting police officers to be dispatched to the area.
However, it is believed the individual never entered the school zone, which is a gun-free zone, and there is no indication the individual violated any laws, said San Angelo Police Officer John Bouligny.
The individual still hadn’t been located as of 2 p.m. Monday.
Out of precaution, Lake View High School entered its hold protocol, stated San Angelo ISD Executive Director of Communications Shannon Schwartz.
The hold protocol requires students and staff to remain in their classrooms until it’s determined to be safe. The school was not placed on a lockdown, and students were not released early, Schwartz said.
There were misleading posts shared on social media regarding the incident, said Bouligny, who cautioned people to be careful sharing unverified information.
