Site of Future Performing Arts Center Unveiled in Christoval

CHRISTOVAL, TX — A sign marking the location of the future Christoval Performing Arts Center was unveiled Tuesday morning by the CTX Performing Arts Center Committee, a group of Christoval community members organized under the San Angelo Area Foundation.

The planned facility will be privately funded and include a 900-seat auditorium, a band hall, and a large multi-use lobby for events such as prom, banquets and more. The facility is intended to meet University Interscholastic League standards and reduce the district’s need to rent space in San Angelo for major school events.

The future Christoval Performing Arts Center will be built on a site in front of Christoval High School at 20454 Ranch Road 2084.

"Many of the schools in our area are assisted with royalty income, and that goes a long way in providing extra-curricular facilities," committee member Theresa Cortez said. "We do not have a pump jack in our parking lot like other school districts, but we have heart, and that is seen in the success of our One Act Play program, our band program, and our school as a whole, and we want to provide these students with the tools they need to be successful."

The Christoval Performing Arts Center is a special project under the San Angelo Area Foundation and will be accepting community support during the San Angelo Gives effort May 6. Seed money is necessary for the project to qualify for applicable grants and foundations, stated a press release.

The committee also hopes to qualify for grants and foundation support.

"Currently the school district must rent space in San Angelo for graduation, prom, and does not have a stage that is UlL compliant," Cortez said. "A new facility would save the district rental and transportation fees, while also creating an opportunity to host district, regional and area events to generate funds."

The committee was formed in 2023 to address the lack of extracurricular facilities in Christoval ISD. Cortez said the project is driven by community passion, citing the success of local programs despite limited infrastructure.

Christoval is one of the few districts in the region without royalty income to assist with capital projects. Christoval relies solely on property value and the State of Texas for funding, which is not adequate to include extracurricular facilities.

The committee has raised $500,000 toward its $1 million goal, which it aims to reach by the end of 2025, according to the Christoval Chamber of Commerce.
