SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo City Council has unanimously approved the wayfinding signage project for the Concho River Walk, along with an expansion to add three additional signs extending the system to the Texas Bank Sports Complex.
The project, a collaboration with architect Craig Kinney and Angelo State University graphic arts students, aims to enhance navigation for locals and visitors. The final design includes 24 signs, divided into three categories:
- Directional signs to guide users along the trail.
- Map signs placed at key locations with “You Are Here” indicators.
- Informational signs to highlight points of interest.
Mayor Brenda Gunter emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “I know that the river is one of our greatest assets and that many people utilize the river and all the areas around the river, but no one knows where they’re going. If you’re from outside of San Angelo, Texas, and sometimes even when you’re in San Angelo, Texas, you know you’re on a trail, but you’re not sure where it’s going to go, or where it ends or where it leads to. So we need a much better way of wayfinding to really improve the trails in the downtown river area. We’ve got to let people know where they’re going. And I like what you’ve presented. I’m very glad that we involved Angelo State University students to help us in the concept of this and work with us. I think it’s great outreach.”
The signs will be made from Corten steel, brushed aluminum, and weather-resistant polyurethane plastic, designed to be durable and low-maintenance. City officials noted the signage will be expandable for future extensions.
Cost & Funding:
- Total cost: $236,000, including the additional signs.
- Funding source: Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) funds.
- Implementation timeline: Spring and Summer 2025 if funding is secured.
A budget amendment for the expanded project will be presented at the March 4 City Council meeting.
