San Angelo Police Department Celebrates Opening of Academy at Howard College

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Police Department commemorated the relocation of its academy to Howard College with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025.

Police Chief Travis Griffith praised Howard College’s leadership for making the partnership happen so quickly.

“I see this as an opportunity for the San Angelo Police Department and the City of San Angelo to be able to move forward with Howard College into a very bright future, and to be able to lead the way in education of our future law enforcement,” Griffith said.

There are 13 cadets in the inaugural class at Howard College.

Griffith said having the academy located at Howard will give the cadets a chance to further their education and hopefully attract other potential cadets.

“It’s an opportunity for the San Angelo Police Department to be able to meet cadets that are around other students, to hopefully get them to recruit more, and to be able to have an opportunity to look for a brighter future in San Angelo in regards to hiring those cadets. We can get them trained faster and have the ability for you to have a better product, if you will, with an officer in the field,” Griffith said.

Cadets will have the opportunity to earn 18 hours of college credits. They’ll have six months of training at the academy, followed by 17 weeks of field training.
