City Council Upholds Historic Commission’s Denial of Demolition Request for Downtown Building

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to uphold the Design and Historic Review Commission’s decision to deny a demolition request for a mid-century modern building located at 231 W. Beauregard Ave.

The council cited concerns over preserving the city’s downtown character and avoiding empty lots at key intersections.

The structure, built in the late 1950s and classified as a “medium contributor” to the mid-century architectural style, was purchased by the First National Bank of Mertzon. The bank sought to demolish the building, potentially for future development or parking space. However, the DHRC denied the request, stating that they wanted to review the site holistically and ensure any new construction would align with the downtown’s design standards.

Council members echoed concerns about the negative impact of turning the site into another parking lot.

“We cannot keep taking out buildings and leaving empty lots,” Mayor Brenda Gunter said. “Our major intersections already have too many parking lots, making the area appear inactive after hours.”

Councilmember Harry Thomas, whose district includes the property, expressed support for the DHRC’s decision, adding that he could not support the demolition without seeing plans for what would replace the building.

“We need development, not demolishing,” he said.

The Planning and Development Services staff had recommended approval of the demolition with conditions, including requiring DHRC approval for any future structures and necessary building permits. However, staff acknowledged the challenge of balancing downtown development with historic preservation.

Ultimately, the council upheld the DHRC’s 6-0 vote to deny the demolition request.

Who do these pompous bureaucrats think they are? The bank purchased the property; they own it. The bank should be able to do whatever they want with their property. Besides, in my humble opinion, the building these overlords are trying to save is hideous. Too much government and not enough liberty.

What are these Nazis gonna do next? Make the banks sell the houses they own and then give people interest-free loans? The horror! The horror!!

Think of the defenseless banks!
