Atmos Energy Shares Safety Tips For Bitter Cold Temperatures

SAN ANGELO, TX –  Atmos Energy is asking customers to take precautions to stay safe and conserve energy during the cold snap. The company is actively monitoring conditions and deploying resources to ensure reliable service.

Atmos Energy provided several safety tips to help households prepare:

  • Avoid using ovens or gas stovetops to heat your home. These appliances are not designed for heating and pose a safety risk.
  • Protect natural gas meters by removing snow and ice with a broom or brush. Avoid using hard objects, which could damage the meter.
  • Keep external vents clear to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. If unsure about proper venting, consult a licensed plumber or contractor.
  • Prevent frozen pipes by letting faucets trickle, keeping cabinet doors open, and ensuring doors and windows remain shut to retain heat.
  • Set thermostats wisely to conserve energy. Atmos recommends 68°F during the day and 58°F at night or when away from home, where safe.

Although natural gas outages are rare, Atmos encourages customers to call their 24/7 emergency line at 866-322-8667 if they experience service issues. In case of a suspected gas leak, leave the area immediately, call 911, and contact Atmos Energy’s emergency number.
