SAN ANGELO, TX — A recent GoFundMe campaign for Floyd Bias, a City of San Angelo Animal Control Officer who was viciously attacked by two pit bull mixed-breed dogs last week, has raised questions about the City’s insurance policies and employee benefits.
Bias was on duty when the attack occurred, resulting in severe injuries that required him to be airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock for extended treatment. Fortunately, reports indicate that Bias is expected to recover. In a video released this week, Bias recounted the harrowing details of the attack.
City of San Angelo human resources officials confirmed that Bias’s medical expenses will be fully covered under the City’s workers' compensation insurance. This includes 100% of his hospitalization and other medical costs. Furthermore, City employees injured on the job are entitled to full salary and benefits during their recovery period. For employees with extensive tenure, like Bias, accumulated sick days ensure continued full wages and benefits should the recovery period extend beyond standard workers’ compensation coverage.
This raises the question: why was a GoFundMe campaign launched? The fundraiser, organized by Bias’s niece, Amanda Rojas, has garnered approximately $2,600 of its $5,000 goal. According to Rojas, the funds are intended to assist the family with travel expenses to and from Lubbock, as well as other incidental costs not covered by Bias’s regular pay. Rojas has kept donors updated on Bias’s progress, including details of his surgeries and treatments.
Despite these additional needs, it is important to note that the City of San Angelo’s insurance and policies provide comprehensive care and support for employees injured on the job.
