San Angelo Citizen Honored for Heroic Rescue During Apartment Fire

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo nurse was recognized by the police and fire departments for his heroic actions during a fire at his apartment complex, San Angelo police announced today.

Chief Travis Griffith of the San Angelo Police Department honored Thomas Ndlovu, a nurse at Shannon Hospital, during a press conference on Tuesday for saving two children from a burning apartment on September 14.

It was said at the meeting that the man sprang into action when he heard loud noises outside and saw that the apartment above his was on fire.

He entered the burning building and rescued a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, both of whom were trapped inside. Ndlovu kicked down the door and fought through smoke to bring the children to safety.

“That is heroism. That is being a real hero,” said Chief Griffith. “When a lot of other people would have pulled their cameras out and recorded this event, Thomas showed up and stepped up.”

The children are currently receiving treatment for their injuries in San Antonio. Ndlovu was presented with a life-saving award and a challenge coin by the police department, and the San Angelo Police Officers Coalition also presented him with a plaque to recognize his bravery.

In addressing the fire’s cause, Chief Griffith dispelled rumors that it was started by children playing with fire. Investigators from the San Angelo Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was caused by an e-bike charger malfunction.

Griffith also offered safety advice, urging residents to be cautious when charging electronic devices.

“Don’t overcharge those batteries… once you see it’s fully charged, pull it out,” he said.

The press conference concluded with a reminder of the importance of stepping up in moments of crisis.

“When real people from right here in Texas and San Angelo step up and do the right thing, that’s when we see true heroes emerge,” said Griffith.
