SAN ANGELO, TX — Mayor Brenda Gunter of San Angelo issued two proclamations on September 17, 2024, addressing food insecurity and celebrating Hispanic heritage.
The first proclamation declared September as Hunger Action Month in San Angelo, highlighting the work of the Tom Green County Hunger Coalition.
The coalition seeks to combat food insecurity, which affects 15.7% of the county’s population—equating to over 18,000 people—including 5,840 children. Mayor Gunter stressed the importance of community collaboration to address this critical issue under the campaign slogan, “Hunger Happens Here.”
In a separate proclamation, the Mayor also recognized Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the contributions of the San Angelo Hispanic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center (HHM). The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together."
Mayor Gunter praised the HHM for its educational initiatives and its role in preserving Hispanic culture, history, and accomplishments. Upcoming events, including a gala and workshop, were announced in alignment with the nationwide theme.
