SAN ANGELO, TX - The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office hosted a flag-raising ceremony in honor of National Police Week.
The solemn event started Monday, May 13, at 9 a.m. at the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, 222 West Harris Ave.
“National Police Week reminds us that we have to be physically and mentally able to respond to whatever the challenge is to keep our community safe,” the sheriff said. “The men and woman that decide to get up every morning and put on that badge have accepted the challenge to give whatever it takes. And that to me is the purpose of police week.”
At the ceremony, an American flag was presented to the family of law enforcement representatives who gave their lives in the line of duty.
One of the keynote speakers was Texas Ranger Major Wayne Matthews.
“We are the line between anarchy and a fragile civilized society,” he said. “Our oath to the constitution and our community is what we hold dearly and sacrifice for, which includes the ultimate sacrifice, of being killed in the line of duty. It is the most excruciating, and tragic experience that we have in this job. We must remember those who paid the ultimate price and the families left behind that pay the price many times over.”
Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) was the second and last keynote speaker. He spoke about his time spent with the New York Police Department and the strong community support that the Concho Valley has for its law enforcement.
“We are blessed to live in this community,” Pfluger said. “Every morning when you wake up and put that uniform on, it’s to protect and serve. You’re not running away from the fire, you’re running towards it, at all times.”
