SAN ANGELO, TX – Fort Concho's historic grounds will again host "Polo on the Concho" on Saturday, May 3.
According to information released by the San Angelo Symphony, this year's competition will see three teams, including the returning champions "Mayer Ranch Polo." They all will vie for the title in a round-robin format that spans six "chukkers" of play.
Mayer Ranch Polo, fresh from their participation in the Wellington Polo Tour at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Florida, aims to defend their title.
The team's lead, Kenny Mayer, shared his familial ties to the sport with the US Polo Association in an article featured on the association's website.
“I grew up riding ranch horses on our family cattle/sheep ranch in West Texas,” Mayer stated. “I would hear all the stories about polo in San Angelo, TX, how my relatives raised polo horses during the period around 1910-1950, and how the Mertz brothers competed in polo across the US. The more I dug into the stories and history of my family in the sport, the more I wanted to keep the traditions alive."
The event kicks off with an 11 a.m. check-in at Fort Concho. It is followed by an evening of Texas barbecue and music by Wade Bowen at the First Financial Pavilion, starting at 6 p.m.
The all-inclusive tickets offer seating under the main tents and lunch to open bars for adults and unlimited refreshments for children.
For those interested in joining the festivities or seeking to support the event, all-inclusive adult and child reservations are currently available.
