Cutting Masters Crowned in 'Fastest Torch’ Contest

SAN ANGELO, TX - The San Angelo Spur Arena played host to the "Fastest Torch Contest" on February 1, showcasing the cutting-edge skills of 79 students from 31 different schools.

The contest randomly paired participants through a drawing, creating a bracket that remained unchanged throughout the competition.

In each round of the contest, participants light their torches, adjust to a neutral flame, and make the cut required for that specific stage.

The student whose metal fell to the ground first advanced to the next round, while their counterpart faced elimination.

The top four places were not only awarded cash prizes but also received a plethora of additional rewards, including welding and cutting equipment generously donated by local companies.

The individuals who secured a top-four spot were:

  • First place: A.B. Flowers of Post FFA - Awarded $400
  • Second place: Jeremy Salazar of Lorenzo FFA - Awarded $300
  • Third place: Gabriel Marler of Liberty Hill FFA - Awarded $200
  • Fourth place: Douglas Brown of Jacksboro FFA - Awarded $100
