SAN ANGELO, TX - San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter recently highlighted a significant achievement in the fight against crime.
According to the information provided by Carter, from 2016 to 2023, the department witnessed a 45 percent drop in "Part 1 Offenses," showing an average annual crime reduction of 10 percent.
Various strategic initiatives contributed to this notable accomplishment, with Chief Carter identifying key factors behind the success:
A. Increase in Officer Positions: The department added 15 new officer positions, reinforcing their commitment to public safety.
B. Establishment of Anti-Crime Unit and Strengthened Patrol: This involved increasing the number of Patrol officers, adding detectives to both the Criminal Investigation Division and Street Crimes Unit, and implementing targeted enforcement based on “actionable intelligence.”
C. Community Engagement and Technology Utilization: The police department also increased community involvement to reduce crime by utilizing Ring Doorbell technology and community engagement.
D. Investments in Technology: This included the adoption of body cameras, in-car video systems, new Records Management Systems, predictive analysis software, drones, and other technologies to enhance overall efficiency.
E. Organizational Leadership and Partnerships: Underpinning the success was a strategic organizational leadership that prioritized crime deterrence, detection, intelligence gathering, and evidence collection. The department also forged effective partnerships with local, state, and federal criminal justice agencies.
