San Angelo ISD Board Set to Officially Hire New Superintendent

SAN ANGELO - The San Angelo Independent School District board of trustees will convene tonight to potentially greenlight the appointment of Dr. Chris Moran as the district's new superintendent.

Named as the lone finalist on Nov. 13, 2023, Dr. Moran is a seasoned educator with 32 years of experience and currently serves as superintendent at Whitehouse ISD. 

Dr. Moran will take over from Dr. Carl Dethloff who has held the position since July 2015 and is set to retire at the end of December 2023, capping a 33-year career in Texas public schools.

The board is mandated to provide public notice of the finalist's name at least 21 days before the meeting where the final employment decision is to be made. 

Dr. Moran received his undergraduate degree from Evangel University and his graduate degree from The University of Texas at Tyler.

He earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2005 while also receiving Post-Doctoral training through the Lamar University Center for Executive Leadership and the SMU District Leadership Fellows.

Beginning as a teacher and basketball coach, he progressed through roles like assistant principal and principal before assuming superintendent positions in various districts.

Currently overseeing approximately 5,000 students and 800 employees in Whitehouse ISD, Dr. Moran's move to SAISD represents a promotion, given that SAISD is three times as large.

Dr. Moran holds accolades such as Superintendent of the Year in Region 7 (2019) and High School Principal of the Year for Region VII (2006).

He serves on numerous local and state committees, including Vice President of the Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of School Administrators Executive Committee member, SUPERnet Internet Consortium Managing Board Chair, and served on the Texas Education Agency Commissioner’s Cabinet. 

Dr. Moran is married to his wife, Christa, and is a proud father to four children, Rebekah, Elisabeth, Susanna, and David, and a grandfather of two.

The special meeting of the SAISD Board of Trustees is scheduled for today, Monday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. in the SAISD Administration Building, Board Room, 1621 University.
