SAN ANGELO, TX — The Concho Valley Regional Food Bank received a welcome surprise this week when the Greek organizations at Angelo State University said they are sending over 150 volunteers to help inspect, repack and organize cases upon cases of cosmetically damaged food for three hours Thursday evening, April 13, 2023.
Lee Piplin, Director at the Food Bank, said the labor cost savings is quite substantial. When staff conducts these duties, it can cost as much as $26 per hour per person. Volunteers are difficult to come by consistently, explained CV Food Bank Volunteer Coordinator Claire Pedersen.
This is Greek Week at Angelo State. Three sororities and four fraternities sent volunteers from all classes — freshmen through seniors — to help the food bank for three hours on a Thursday evening.
Hotdogs and refreshments were served as cases of food was stacked and organized. Pipkin said the food sorted today will go out to all of the Food Bank’s community partners next week.
“This is the largest volunteer event we have ever had,” Piplin said with a smile.
