SAN ANGELO, TX – Since 1965 the Boys & Girls Club has served youth in San Angelo, Texas, as part of a joint effort with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which was formed in 1906.
We have always prided ourselves on being the leader in the field of youth development, but more importantly in provide kids a safe space during out of school hours.
Over the last couple of years, our focus has been on trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for our members. One of the places there is consistency in an ever changing and inconsistent time in all our lives. Boys & Girls Clubs operate under five core areas, Education & Career Development, Character & Leadership Development, Health & Life Skills, Sports Fitness, and the Arts.
We achieve this by facilitating small group programs and activities, and inviting in other agencies to present programs, just to name a few. We serve youth ages 6-18 years old.
In January of this year, we were approached by our national organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, BGCA, about an opportunity to work with another club organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of Menard. Like us, they provide a safe space for youth and a place of consistency.
In March of this year, we entered into a management agreement with the Boys & Girls Club of Menard. During this time, we worked together to determine if we would make a good team. We “dated” to decide if this would be a good marriage. We reviewed and matched our policies and procedures. Reviewed each other’s finances. Looked at our programs. And just spent time working together to see how we could take our programs to another level!
After it was determined that this makes perfect sense, both boards voted to move forward with a merger! Why a merger…
- Impact More Lives – find strength in numbers to have greater impact
- Attract New Skills – attract staff & board members with new capabilities
- Grow Network – leverage new board relationships to access new networks
- Expand Career Opportunities – increase opportunities for career growth
- Attract New Donors – attract corporate donors, foundations, and individuals
- Strengthen Programs – provide new opportunities to learn & shadow
- Improve Marketing – eliminate market confusion
- Economies of Scale –enhance purchasing power
When I came to this community January of ’21, I looked at surrounding communities and realized there is very little for youth to do in those communities. I dreamt of opening Clubs in those places and hoped our board would be open to a name change that would make doing that seamless. Dreams come true in San Angelo, Texas.
Along with the merger, we are changing our name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Concho Valley! Amazing things are in store for the youth in the Concho Valley and we are so thankful to have you be a part of it!
