SAN ANGELO, TX — Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills have prompted the City of San Angelo to open a warming shelter through Christmas. The City and the American Red Cross are operating the warming shelter in the Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center on Farr St. and they are still looking for volunteers this weekend to help at the warming shelter.
San Angelo LIVE! spoke with the employees from Red Cross on Friday morning. “We had about 22 people in the shelter last night and are hovering around 20 people right now. We are expecting many more tonight,” they said.
When asked about volunteers, “We still need volunteers today (Friday), we are filling up tomorrow (Saturday), and we really need help on Sunday to assist with taking the shelter down,” the Red Cross said.
The City needs volunteers to help assist the American Red Cross with the operation of the warming shelter. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Robert Salas at [email protected] (mail to: [email protected]).
The City’s warming shelter is located at the Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center, 1103 Farr St. The shelter will be open from 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, to noon on Sunday, Dec. 25.
