SAN ANGELO – Goodfellow Air Force Base personnel Thursday will conduct a base-wide active shooter exercise which may cause some concern among residents near the base in east San Angelo.
According to information from GAFB, personnel will conduct an active shooter exercise this Thursday, April 21.
Individuals in the area of Goodfellow may hear announcements over the “giant voice” system, sirens and see response vehicles during the exercise and should not be alarmed.
Delays at both gates may be caused by heightened security measures on base. We regret any inconveniences these measures may cause our visitors.
Officials at Goodfellow are asking people to plan to arrive early for appointments and call in advance to ensure appointments and services are not impacted.

"Disturbances" at Goodfellow can be entertaining. Some years ago the drivers of a commercial plane coming in from DFW mistook the runways at Goodfellow for those of Mathis Interplanetary Spaceport and safely set their plane down there. That was the good part.
The bad part was that Goodfellow then, as it is now, was a secured training base and non-military aircraft using the place as somewhere to land was frowned upon. Heck, military aircraft use the runways VERY infrequently if at all. The errant commercial plane was greeted by sternly frowning (and well armed) Military Police types with little sense of humor.
It seems the drivers of the commercial plane looked down, saw runways like those they were expecting, but failed to note that Mathis has a rather obvious lake next to it. Goodfellow lacks that. Oops. My understanding is that these poor souls were forced to find other employment as a result of this little uh-oh.
My further understanding is that the passengers of the commercial plane were not amused by the inconvenience this kerfuffle produced. "Where do I collect my bags? How do I get to my rent car? Where the hell am I?"... and so forth.
Heck, I've done work at Goodfellow. Back in those days those people took security very seriously. I can't imagine their watching a strange plane coming in to land.
