SAN ANGELO – The newly formed All Women Veterans Alliance (AWVA) of San Angelo is growing and looking for new members in addition to holding several special events beginning with a Fish Fry Saturday, Oct. 23.
The first event is a Fish Fry Saturday Oct. 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plates can be picked up at the Jackson Lodge # 15 at 328 W. 3rd St. in San Angelo.
AWVA Commander Leandra Hernandez stopped by San Angelo Live! Monday to discuss the event.
According to Commander Hernandez, the Fish Plate Saturday includes catfish, beans, potato salad, bread and dessert. Plates are to-go only and are $12 each.

The AWVA formed about two months ago. Hernandez said, "We became peer leaders for WOVEN which is a Women Veterans Network. We lead women's groups in a course that's about eight weeks long and we talk about everything from transitions to your life now to balance to self esteem and all these types of things."
"Doing all that we started to notice there were more women veterans out there that hadn't had any real connection with people because after the program there was nothing to connect them to." Hernandez said.
"We were doing monthly dinners on our own meeting with women but we really saw there was potential to do so much more with women veterans. We saw what good could come from programs with women veterans." said Hernandez.
AWVA Treasurer Patricia Murdoch said, "Right now the focus of our fundraising effort is to get our non-profit status and for the Gala (coming up in 2022).
The All Women Veterans Alliance is looking for all women veterans to ride on the float in the Veterans Day Parade and they are helping with a Veterans Thanksgiving meal.
