The Truth Behind San Angelo's New Sidewalks

SAN ANGELO, TX – The truth behind the City of San Angelo's new sidewalks is that no city tax dollars were used to in the nearly $4.5 million project.

According to the Director of Transportation Planning & Development at TxDot San Angelo John Dwitt, in August 2019 FNH Construction was contracted by TxDot for the sidewalk project on Knickerbocker Rd., Bryant Blvd., and FM 2288. The total cost of the project is  $4,491,789.

Although the sidewalks are in the city limits of San Angelo not one city tax dollar was used on the project. Instead the money came from a statewide "Curb Ramp/Sidewalk" program that is funded 80 percent by the federal government.

The program was established in order for sidewalks across the nation to become ADA and TDLR compliant. It is focused on alleviating the “ramps to nowhere” appearance of current pedestrian facilities, providing a safe, ADA/TDLR compliant connection along these major arterials.

Currently San Angelo City Government is aware of certain issues that the city is facing following Winter Storm Uri. Mayor Gunter confirmed that they will be addressing the water and road issues as soon as possible.
