Lady in Blue Phase II Ground Breaking

SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the ground breaking for phase II of the Lady in Blue bronze statue project.

Phase I of the project was the installation of two larger-than-life statues along the Concho River depicting the Lady in Blue and a child and a Jumano brave.  The statues were designed and created by world renowned sculptor Vic Payne and installed in 2018.

Phase II will include a limestone perimeter wall which is now under construction.

Phase III will be landscaping and lighting around the statues.

The Lady in Blue project is privately funded and donations are being accepted.  There is a paver program where anyone can purchase a paver for $150 with a personalized message.

The story of the Lady in Blue has been made into a feature length film, a play, and a song.

San Angeloan Tilly Chandler created and manages the project.

The Lady in Blue is the story of a Catholic nun from Agreda, Spain and the native Jumano Indians who lived in the Concho Valley.

According to Chandler, "San Angelo's place in Texas history is secure as the site of the first missionary effort in the state – more than 45 years before El Paso, more than 80 years before San Antonio.  In the early 1600's this mysterious woman, dressed in a flowing blue cape, tended to the sick, comforted the afflicted and, most importantly, taught indigenous people about the Lord Jesus Christ."

The Lady in Blue was a nun who would go into a trance in her room in the monastery in Spain and would appear to the Jumano Indians.

The Vatican is investigating the life of the Lady in Blue for possible sainthood.
