San Angelo Confirms Naphthalene Contamination in Water System

SAN ANGELO, TX — The City of San Angelo gave another update on the water situation in San Angelo Wednesday afternoon.

According to City Officials, on Feb. 10, three major contaminates were found in San Angelo’s water: Benzene, Acetone, and naphthalene.

Officials do know the contamination did not come from the water treatment facility plant.

“This is not a source water issue” said Director Allison Struve. “The fresh water being pumped to the upper plane is not contaminated.”

Officials believe that contamination is due to a back up, likely through a check valve at a client connection to the water system, causing a backflow.

The City and the TCEQ are searching for the source of the contamination with more testing.

Bottom line: More parts of the city that are no longer under the do-not-use advisory have been expanded as the investigation and testing has increased. City officials do not yet know the source of the contamination, but confirmed what chemicals were the cause.
