Fort Concho to Feature Two Western Art Shows

SAN ANGELO, TX – Fort Concho will have two special western arts shows this summer.

“The Life and Times of Texas Icon, Charles Goodnight,” covers the story of the famed cattleman in 13 paintings by noted western artist Lee Cable. A small sketch accompanies each painting that explains how the artist framed and portrayed each historical scene. This display is sponsored by the Susan Kathleen Black Foundation and is free to all. The show remains at the fort’s Barracks 1 Visitor Center for the summer at 630 South Oakes St.

On Thursday, June 25, the American Plains Artists Show opens at the fort’s Quartermaster Galleries, located near Flipper and Burgess streets on the fort’s northeast corner. The opening reception with light refreshments will run from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. and is free to all. Current building capacity and social distancing guidelines will be in effect. Guests are encouraged to wear masks.

This year’s show features 68 artists from 18 states with 96 paintings and a dozen sculptures covering a wide range of western themes of the American Great Plains. All works are for sale with proceeds benefiting the respective artist, the American Plains Artists and Fort Concho. The show will remain free to all with hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and Sundays 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The show ends on Sunday, Aug. 2.
