San Angelo Animal Shelter At Max Capacity, Adopt or Foster Today

SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity and they need the community’s help. With 188 dogs and 258 cats in residence, they are unable to house any more pets in need of the home.

In an effort to make the adoption process more accessible for those looking to adopt, they are launching the Name Your Own Price Adoption Event starting today and running through October 5th. This will allow future pet owners to provide the price they consider reasonable for dogs 4 months or older, while cat adoptions are available free of charge.

If the number of pets is not reduced in the coming days, animals that are not placed in adoptive or foster homes will face the possibility of euthanasia. Even though San Angelo Animal Shelter partnered with Concho Valley Paws in 2017 for a no-kill initiative, they need the public to understand that “that is very different from being a sustainable no-kill facility."

"Anytime there is a large influx of animals arriving at the shelter, it puts the current shelter population at risk because space and resources are finite.” said Jenie Wilson, Concho Valley Paws Executive Director, “San Angelo still has a population crisis coupled with a population of irresponsible pet owners which makes it a constant struggle for the shelter and PAWS to prevent euthanasia for space.”

For families who can commit to a long-term adoption, fostering a dog or cat can be a viable option. “Fostering is a very rewarding experience.” said Wilson, “We have beautiful dogs and cats of all breeds, ages, and sizes. They can find homes but what we need is time and space to make that happen, and those two things are never on our side."

Fostering pets saves their lives and provides the opportunity for families and individuals to provide a loving home for a pet, even if it is temporary. Concho Valley PAWS provides for all the needs of pets in foster care, including making sure the pet is spayed or neutered, has updated vaccines and is micro-chipped before being sent to a foster home. PAWS can also provide a crate, bed, and food for the foster pet to ensure that it does not become a financial burden on the foster family.

Fostering pets from the San Angelo Animal Shelter is one of the shelter's most valuable resources and it allows pets the opportunity to find their adopted home without having to face the possibility of euthanasia.

To take advantage of the Name Your Own Price Adoption event, visit the shelter at 3142 U.S. Highway 67N. The shelter is open from 10 am -- 6 pm, Monday - Friday. The shelter will also be open on Saturday, October 5th from 1 pm - 4 pm.
