SAN ANGELO, TX — On Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Day was celebrated at Galilee Baptist Church, located at 721 West 19th Street, in a manner befitting a pastor, which is what Dr. King was, and what was at the core his civil rights movement.
The service was one of praise, prayer, and a reminder that civil rights has a long way to go to achieve, “not perfection,” as Sister Marcella Jenkins said in her homily, “but as close to goodness as we can get.”
Ephesians 4:2, 3 was the basis upon which message was delivered:
“I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called; with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
The event was hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr., Association. Officers for the Association are Franklin A. Devours Sr., Reverend Michael Luckett, Marjorie Green, and Elaine Pope.
Rev. John S. Pope, Jr. is the pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.
Today’s ecumenical service was the last in a series of events that have marked the weekend leading up to the official holiday. A Youth Program was held at New Jerusalem Church. A Gospel Fest was held at St. Paul Presbyterian Church, and there was also an ecumenical service at San Angelo Greater I.M.E. Church.
