Aviation Icing Forecasts Have Cancelled Most Airline Flights

SAN ANGELO, TX — Commercial airliner flights on New Year's Eve from San Angelo are cancelled due to icing. The National Weather Service issued an AIRMET about moderate icing from Amarillo, to Dallas to Houston, to Del Rio, to El Paso, and central New Mexico back to Amarillo. The icing is forecasted between the surface and about 8,000 feet.

It is hazardous to operate jet aircraft in moderate icing conditions.

Currently at Mathis Field, the clouds are at just 900 feet above the ground with winds out of the north at 18 mph. The temperature/dewpoint spread is just 5 degrees F (24 degrees F temperature and 19 degrees F dewpoint). The spread is ripe for icing conditions for aviation to the surface.

Light snow is forecasted for the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
