SAN ANGELO, TX -- The San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition is hosting a grand opening and public ribbon-cutting Tuesday, Oct. 3, for the Elta Joyce Murphey Performance Hall and Stage at City Auditorium in City Hall.
The ribbon-cutting will be at 4 p.m. Refreshments, entertainment and tours will immediately follow and continue through 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can also enter to win tickets to future performances.
City Auditorium has been closed since 2009. Improvements include restoration of the historic facility, new seating, a 17,000-square-foot back-of-the-house addition, expansion of restrooms, state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, and restoration of the original curtain.
The $16-plus million project was a joint effort by the City of San Angelo and the San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition that involved public and private funding.
The performance space within City Auditorium that opened in 1929 has been renamed the Murphey Performance Hall at City Auditorium, thanks to a generous gift from Elta Joyce Murphey McAfee. It will reopen with the first San Angelo Symphony performance of the 2017-2018 season on Saturday, Oct. 7.
