That Big Yellow Crane in Downtown San Angelo is Lifting Beams 7 Stories

SAN ANGELO, TX -- There’s a big yellow crane in downtown San Angelo and it can be seen from around most of the city.

The crane is at the corner of Magdalen and E. College Ave. behind Shannon Medical Center.  It is being used to lift steel beams on Shannon’s Ambulatory Surgery Center expansion on the back corner of Shannon Medical Center.

According to a story we published earlier, the Ambulatory Surgery Center is expanding by 3,800 square feet to include additional patient rooms along with preparatory and recovery space.

According to Shannon Medical Center, they are adding a new seven-story 80,000 square foot tower on the northeast corner of the hospital.

The new addition will include renovation of the current Emergency Department along with additional square footage and patient rooms; enlargement of the cafeteria on the second floor and the addition of two new conference rooms; addition of 10 more ICU rooms on the third floor and five additional operating rooms; relocation and construction of new cardiac catheterization lab on the fourth floor; and 15 new patient rooms on both floors 5 and 6.  The project will also include renovation of 50,000 square feet of existing space.

At a groundbreaking last December, then President and CEO of Shannon Bryan Horner said,“As Shannon continues to grow, our goal is to maintain exceptional facilities, technology and providers for our patients and to continue to meet their needs here, at home, in West Texas.”

Horner added, “We are blessed at Shannon to have very talented providers who continue to update their skills and bring new procedures to the Concho Valley.  Much of this expansion will create spaces that will support new technology and services so our patients do not have to seek those outside our community.”

The new operating rooms will include a dedicated Neurosurgery Room, a dedicated room for robotic surgery, and a Hybrid Room that will support advanced cardiac procedures. The cardiac cath lab will include a room dedicated for electrophysiology procedures. Shannon currently partners with Electrophysiology physicians from Austin who see patients in clinic weekly in San Angelo and will soon begin performing

procedures in San Angelo so patients do not have to travel to Austin.

The total project is estimated to cost $74 million and be complete in December 2018.

“The Shannon Trust is providing the funding for this project,” said Horner. “Most hospitals cannot do projects like this in our current healthcare economy, and we are fortunate to have the local support of the Shannon Trust so we can ensure we have the capacity to serve our community as it continues to grow in the future.”
