Three San Angelo Area Fire Departments Extinguish Threatening Brush Fire in 30 Minutes

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – Giant brush fire has erupted on the hill on Mercedes St. north of Arden Rd. San Angelo Fire Department is there and has called for backup with equipment to fight brush fires.

The area is south of the San Angelo State Park where there are frequent controlled burns. This does not appear to be a controlled burn.

About 60 homes are nearby on Mercedes St and Townview Ln. Off Arden Rd. Angelo Mini Storage is located only two blocks south of location of the flames.

Update 7:18 p.m.

 

Arden Rd. and Mercedes St. are blocked. Firefighters appear to have made significant progress in controlling the blaze.

 

Update 8:00 p.m.

 

The fire started at 6:20 p.m., said Kurt Kemp, Park Superintendent with the Texas Parks and Wildlife. “We’re not sure exactly what started it,” he added.

 

Kemp said it appeared to have started near the roadway of Mercedes St. The San Angelo State Park is north of Mercedes, where Kemp keeps a close eye on things. He said a full investigation will happen tomorrow to try to determine the fire’s origin.

 

In all, the fire burned 10-15 acres and got close to the housing development off Mercedes. San Angelo Fire Dept., Dove Creek VFD, and Grape Creek VFD extinguished the fire within about 30 minutes, he said.

 

AEP was on location to check to see if any power lines were affected. Kemp said there were no reports of power outages, and he believes no power lines were affected.
