SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Today marks the start of a two-day basketball tournament set to take place in different school gyms and Southside and Carl Ray Johnson recreational centers.
This weekend’s event is a three-season tournament for the youth league of boys and girls. The tournament begins tonight at 6 p.m. and will “finish tomorrow evening at different times depending on age groups,” says Recreation Manager Brent Casey.
This year’s basketball tournament will host 62 different teams from San Angelo and the surrounding communities, such as Ballinger and Wall. The 62 teams participating is a record number compared to last year’s 42 participants. Casey said he's ecstatic, and noted, “We were trying to increase the participation, and we’ve done so; so it’s a great thing.”
Casey attributes the influx of teams joining the basketball tournament to San Angelo's “gearing up for the Girls State Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) day tournament,” which will be here for the first time this March in San Angelo.
Today, the games begin at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m. The games will be held at Southside Recreation Center, Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center, Lincoln Middle School (both gyms), Lee Middle School (both gyms), and Glenn Middle School (both gyms). These locations will host games from Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3 basketball teams.
Tomorrow, January 7, games will be held at Southside Recreation Center, Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center, TLCA, Lincoln Middle School (both gyms), Lee Middle School (both gyms), and Glenn Middle School (girl's gym). Games will begin at 8 a.m. at all of these locations and will go on throughout the day.
