Local Youth Flag Football Team Wins State Tournament

SAN ANGELO, TX – There are many sports groups available to the youth of San Angelo ranging from soccer to swimming. One of the many groups kids can join is the relatively new San Angelo Shockers, a local flag football team. The San Angelo Shockers were established back in 2014 and have since been led by Head Coach Randy Chavez and several assistant coaches. Within the span of two years, the San Angelo Shockers have made their mark not only in San Angelo, but across the state of Texas.

SAN ANGELO SHOCKERS

The San Angelo Shockers team is comprised of 12 kids, 11 boys and 1 girl, who regularly attend practices and games during the season. Additional players jump in when the team needs them as well. The Shockers practice drills in the summer and have weekly practices during the flag football season. Chavez praises his team as "a great group of kids who play very hard and are well disciplined." In addition to their vigorous training sessions, the young kids also play other sports such as basketball and baseball, and some even go to Church camp together says Chavez.

This year was a big year for the San Angelo Shockers. Earlier in the year, the San Angelo Rec hosted a flag football season tournament where they paid the winning team's entry fee to the Flag Football State Tournament. Due to some absent players and coaches, the San Angelo Shockers could not attend. However, Chavez said, “We were very blessed by three different sponsors, and we got our state tournament fee paid for.” Chavez said he's grateful for the numerous businesses and wonderful people who “sponsor teams to help kids play for free or a discounted price.”

Hugs All Around After Winning

The Flag Football Tournament took place in in the early weeks of November in Denton, Texas. A total of 10 teams participated in the 10U division. In a surprising turn of events, the Shockers shut out the Stephenville and Wall teams in the semi-finals, teams that had never been shut out before.

The Shockers and Chavez have stayed humble throughout their win saying both teams played very well, and Chavez considers the [Wall] coaches “some of the best coaches [he has] has ever met.” Chavez has nothing but praise for the countless coaches and believes that "San Angelo as a whole is very blessed to have the amount of coaches who take the time out of their day to help kids learn a game."

The San Angelo Shockers are now refueling on energy and will start practicing for the 2017 State Championship in Burnett, Texas in the near future.
